Industry Standards

Personnel in the PVF Field are advised that at the May, 2006 MSS Conference, the Quality Standards Committee approved the wording of the new PMI (Positive Material Identification) Standard. This new document has been accepted by both the end-user and the manufacturing sectors, including the Valve Companies and will be formally adopted and become an operational MSS Standard shortly. Further, in about a year, the Standard can be sent for ANSI Canvas Method to become an ISO document. This is important, since it would preclude either European or Asian Standards Associations from adopting a PMI standard that would present difficulties to American companies! The PVF Roundtable started work on this Standard several years ago and much of the work was done by Roundtable members, on a Task Group chaired by John Lafferty of Penn Machine. This is an excellent example of a solution to an industry problem that was effectively handled by work done by PVF Roundtable members!

Task Group Approach to Industry Problems: Historically, The PVF Roundtable has formed a number of working committees to develop solutions to specific industry problems. These "Task Groups" are normally composed of both Roundtable and industry personnel experienced in the problem are identified. The efforts of these Task Groups have resulted in significant achievements, as witnessed by the new ASTM Positive Material Identification Standard, ASTM E1916, which is used to identify material used in the pvf industry. The main author of this Standard was John Lafferty from Penn Machine. His efforts have been appreciated by our industry and presently, MSS is putting together a new PMI Standard for use by members of inspection and quality departments throughout the United States.

Spanish Language Terms Used in the PVF Field: Some pipe fitters in several areas of the United States, Europe and South America may share a common Hispanic heritage and will consequently be more familiar with the Spanish language wording for piping components then they are with the English terminology. The following document was put together by Ron Merrick of Fluor Corporation in an effort to ensure that written or oral instructions were plain and could be easily followed by these personnel. Please feel free to download this document and distribute it as needed. If you have additions or corrections to this listing, please forward them to The PVF Roundtable office by E-mail or fax.
